Caring for your powerchair in cooler weather

Magic Mobility wheelchairs are designed to give you independence and help you go further in all conditions.

There are a few tips that we can give you to ensure you get where you need to go all winter long.

Before you head out, there are a few quick things you can do to protect your chair.

When you’re heading to the snow, or a similar potentially corrosive area, we recommend thoroughly coating all metal surfaces with a water dispersant like WD40 or Lanotec to create a barrier and protect your chair.

Remember to check your tyre pressure to ensure they’re at optimal pressure and in good condition. Keep in mind that you might need to adjust your tyre pressure depending on the terrain. Lower tyre pressures can provide more traction on snow. Be sure to check your user manual for the recommended tyre pressure for the terrain you’re on. If you’re concerned at all, we recommend using our puncture resistant tyre liners to help avoid flat tyres or air leaks.

When you get home, we recommend wiping your chair down with a towel to ensure it stays in good working condition.

If your powerchair does get wet, we recommend drying it as thoroughly as possible with a towel and leaving it to sit in a warm room for 10-12 hours to dry. Make sure you check your joystick operation and brakes before using your powerchair.

You can always book your powerchair in for a full service with your local agent to ensure it’s in tiptop shape for all your winter adventures.

Extreme weather conditions can aversely impact your powerchair’s battery life. Store your powerchair in a warm, dry environment and always fully charge your batteries overnight. Keep in mind that charging your powerchair battery for a short period of time, or over-charging it can shorten your battery’s life in the long term.

Please keep in mind that all Magic Mobility powerchairs have electric batteries so must never be driven through water. This includes rivers, creeks and the sea.
