Accessing independence at all ages

When Magic Mobility user Aleacia, now 11, first received her Frontier V6 All Terrain powerchair, it changed the way she interacted with her family, and the roles they played in her life.

With her first ever powerchair, Aleacia is able to be an independent, regular child, and experience childhood independence the way most of her friends do.

Her powerchair has given her the independence to go to school by herself and play outside with her brother. She can even go for walks and to the beach with her family.

“I don’t have to wait for people to push me, and I don’t have to rely on them,” said Aleacia.

The powerchair, affectionately named “Pinky”, has even put her father out of a job – in a good way. Now, instead of walking behind her, pushing her previous manual chair, he gets to walk beside, talk to and hear her.

Seeing Aleacia happy and able to do what she wants to by herself, makes her family happy.

Beyond being able to go where she wants, Aleacia can also participate in childhood rites of passage, like dressing up for school fundraising days or having fun at Halloween.

Over the years, we’ve seen some amazing and creative costumes for both manual and power wheelchair users of all ages. These include an ice cream truck, a character from How to Train your Dragon, Elliott and ET from ET and Doctor Who.

Are you dressing up for Halloween this year? Send us your photos, we’d love to see them.
