TAILORED & AFTER-MARKET SEATING

Over the past 30 years, we have developed our seating assessment experience to offer the highly adaptable array of modular elements that can now be selected and combined to satisfy almost all of our users’ needs.

In some cases, however, Magic Mobility’s array of in-house seating elements may not fully meet your needs. The two options in such cases are to tailor a design and then construct a solution in our manufacturing facility or, more commonly, to select from one of the myriad after-market seating options available from leading manufacturers around the world.

One example of this is postural harnessing, including safety and paediatric harnesses, where the user’s specific needs may require us to look beyond our standard seating options to create a more personalised solution, or to work with an aftermarket seating provider to ensure your needs, desires and comfort are optimally supported.

XABIAN’S CUSTOMISED SEATING SOLUTION

Xabian’s seating was tailored to suit his condition. He is now much more comfortable and confident in his daily life.

Xabian has an undiagnosed movement disorder resulting in his inability to control sometimes extreme arm and hand movements, which significantly limits his activities and participation in all areas of life.

Because of this, Xabian has learnt to do many things he wants or needs to with his feet and toes. He is very bright and keen to be able to engage more at school and increase his participation both in the classroom and outdoors with family and friends.

One unfortunate consequence of Xabian’s flailing arm movements has that they could get caught in areas of his seating, which was causing him pain, stress and anxiety. Xabian’s previous seating solutions relied on highly restrictive straps and padding to prevent this, however these mobility limiting restrictions were themselves becoming a cause of distress. There were some exceptional challenges that required a tailored seating solution for Xabian. These included the need to provide a foot-controlled joystick mount and protective arm padding to maximize Xabian’s upper body freedom of movement, while minimizing his risk of pain, stress and anxiety.

Magic Mobility’s Rehab Engineer, Scott, first adapted available seating materials to create a trial chair that incorporated key aspects proposed design solutions. After this trial, the final, customised elements of the solution were refined and attached to our standard rehab base.

The below video shows just how effective the solution has been in enabling Xabian to enjoy a totally unprecedented level of independence. It also shows just how much pleasure, excitement and independence this has brought into Xabian and his family’s lives.
