A team effort for NDIS success

Australian man Michael’s Frontier V6 Compact has improved his ability to be a more active part of his community since he received it in May this year. He leads his own personal support team of health care professionals, therapists, wheelchair experts and families, all of whom give him the independence and advice he needs to succeed.

Michael’s powerchair was funded through the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and he says he wouldn’t have had such success without a team to support him.

When he was looking for a new wheelchair, Michael’s team of an OT from Spinal Life Australia, a consultant from Job Access and Lissa from Complete Mobility helped him find the right powerchair to suit his lifestyle and aspirations.

Michael works in a tile shop and has a young daughter, so needed a powerchair that would keep him comfortable at work all day, but would also enable him to continue caring for his daughter, minimising the need for additional paid assistance.

His wheelchair expert, Lissa, helped recommend the Magic Mobility Frontier V6 Compact. It is narrow enough to go through the doors of his house without needing them widened, and the lift and tilt functions mean he can serve customers without needing assistance to access high shelves.

“The ability to access standard doorways in my electric powerchair has been a saving grace,” Michael said. “Even my therapist was surprised at its size and ability to do anything, and go anywhere.”

Frontier V6 Compact has 14″ tyres, 800W motors and a narrow footprint.

After researching the Frontier V6 powerchair, Michael asked his OT at Spinal Life Australia to help with his funding submission. Approval for his new chair came through quickly and without challenge.

Magic Mobility powerchairs are crash test compliant, so Michael is now applying for a modified car through the NDIS and a Magic Mobility retractable docking pin. He is working with his team ensure his application demonstrates why the car would be reasonable and necessary.

Even without a modified car, Michael is able to go more places in his powerchair. He can go on walks around the neighbourhood while his daughter rides her bike.

“With my new powerchair, I can go anywhere with ease. I can play tiggy and spotlight with my daughter, which I couldn’t do with my previous wheelchair. I have complete confidence that my chair can handle all my needs,” Michael said.
